Popular Baby Names In 2006..
It's still there: in England and Wales Jack has retained top spot -
that
makes it the most popular boy's name in each of the last 12 years. Olivia
was the most popular girl's name in 2006, up from fourth place the year
before.
As usual there is more movement in the popularity of girl's names with Grace moving up 5 places to second, and Ruby up 11 at 4. Gracie too proved popular moving up 27 places to 60, but the biggest mover was Lola, up 42 places to 51. Also increasing in popularity amongst baby girls' names were Matilda, Imogen, Ava, and Maya. Fallers were Abbie, Caitlin, Niamh, Aimee and Shannon. New entrants to the top 100 baby girls' names were Layla, Isla, Lara and Martha.
Movement in the top 100 baby boys' names is always more subdued. Biggest mover in the top 20 was Alfie, up 6 places to 16. Other comparatively large movers were Freddie and Jayden, both up 16 places at 65 and 68 respectively; and Lucas, Rhys and Bradley all up 10 places. Fallers included the older, more traditional names: Joe, down 15 at 78, while Jonathan and Patrick no longer feature in the top 100. New entrants are Ashton, Theo and Reuben.
In Scotland Jack replaced Lewis as the most popular boy's name, whilst Sophie retained top spot for the girls. Fastest climbers were Keira and Leo.
Northern Ireland's parents favoured Jack and Katie again in 2006. There was little change in the top 10 names. Lower down the rankings, names to rise in popularity were Jake, Lewis, Noah and Harvey; and Isabella and Ruby. Fallers included Aodhan, Louis, Patrick and David in the boy's table, and Kathryn and Katherine in the girl's.
Celebrity's names have again featured: Shayne and Preston have benefited from Big Brother and the X-Factor, while Cruz and Lexie have increased in popularity as a result of footballers David Beckham and Stevie Gerrard.
