Breast Feeding Baby In Public
You want to breast feed your baby but you don't want to be
spend all day at home. If you both go out then your baby isn't going to wait for a feed until you return home, so you will have to feed her while you are out.
You can of course express milk and save it for use while you are out, or you can breast feed in public. Some department stores have rooms for changing baby and you could use these for feeding, but eventually you will be faced with the need to breast feed in public view.
It pays to plan ahead. Wear clothing that is designed for nursing mothers that will allow you to gain easy access to your breasts without flaunting them or making it too obvious what you are doing. They is a wide range of such clothing available these days and you should not have a problem finding something suitable. However, the first time you breast feed in public could be a bit daunting so here are a few tips.
- Practice at home in front of a mirror. By wearing the right clothing you will find that you can feed your baby without getting silly looks from younger men.
- Don't wait for baby to start yelling with hunger before you begin feeding. This will only draw attention to you and make you feel self-conscious.
- Rather than ignore people who pass, smile at them. Chances are they will smile back and look you in the eye rather than look at your breasts.
- Be as discreet as possible. Wearing a shawl can help here by shielding you from unwanted stares.
If you find there is no convenient place to breast feed, or maybe it starts to rain; you can always ask shop staff if they have a room you can use. You will be surprised how most people will try to help.
