Births In N.Ireland..

Who Can Register a Birth?

In Northern Ireland any of the following can register the birth of a baby.

- Either parent if they were married at the time of the birth. If the parents were not married, the father's details will not be recorded on the birth certificate unless he attends with the mother and they both sign the register.

- The Grandmother or Grandfather of the baby.

- The Auntie or Uncle.

- Any person present at the birth.

- Any person having charge of the child.

The address of the local office of the Registrar of Births, Deaths and marriages can be found in the telephone directory. However, if the birth took place in a maternity hospital, the registrar will be present on certain days of each week.

What Information Is Required?

- Full name of baby.

- Full names of the parents.

- Parents' date and place of birth.

- Parents' full addresses and occupations.

Once the birth has been registered the registrar will give you a 'short' birth certificate and an HS123 Infant Registration Card which you use to register baby with your doctor.

Take care when completing the register. Mistakes in spelling - especially baby's name - will be difficult to correct at a later date.
